When can I start walking our 8 week old Boxer in the neighborhood or taking him to parks?
Overview
Taking your Boxer for walks will be one of the most enjoyable times of the day and a great way for you to:
Bond with your dog
Train your Boxer to listen to commands (heel, sit, stay, etc)
What Age Can a Boxer Be Taken For Walks?
It is important to not take your puppy out to public places until they have all of their vaccinations. Each veterinarian has a slightly different schedule.
However, generally, when a puppy is 12 to 15 weeks old, they will have had their 3rd set of the combination shot. After this, you may begin taking your puppy to venture out.
The combination vaccine, usually called a 5-way vaccine, usually includes adenovirus cough and hepatitis, distemper, parainfluenza, and parvovirus. Some combination vaccines may also include leptospirosis (7-way vaccines) and/or coronavirus.
Once your Boxer puppy is completely vetted in this way, you can then feel comfortable bringing him everywhere, including for walks in the neighborhood, parks and more.
Until this time, you can bring your Boxer puppy into an enclosed yard in which there are no other dogs and no chance of other dogs being able to get in.
This will allow you to:
Housebreak your Boxer
Allow your puppy to get used to the "outside" world before they take on the next step of exploring past the yard. When your puppy is very young, they need time to become accustomed to natural sunlight, feeling the wind and other outside elements and the noises of the world such as cars passing by, sirens, airplanes flying overhead, stranger's voices and more. By bringing your Boxer puppy into a safe, enclosed yard from the age of 8 weeks to 12 or 15 weeks will allow just that.
